Suzette M. Malveaux’s background began with his birth in Lansing, Michigan. She was born on December 4, 1966, into a family of Creole descent. Suzette identifies as African-American.
Suzette’s father is the late Floyd J Malveaux. He was the dean of the College of Medicine at Howard University and also the executive director of the Merck Childhood Asthma Network and a founder of Howard University’s National Human Genome Center.
As for Suzette’s mother, she is the late Myrna Ruiz Malveaux. She was an early childhood educator. Suzette was raised alongside her sister Suzanne Malveaux who is a CNN Correspondent.

Talking about the early life, education, and training of Malveaux, she is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University. She is part of the Class of 1988. Malveaux graduated in 1994 at NYU Law School as a Root-Tilden Scholar. She also earned the roles Law Review Associate Editor. She is also a graduate of the American Association of University Women Fellow.
Upon her graduation, Malveaux clerked for the Honorable Robert L. Carter of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Suzette M. Malveaux’s Career
Malveaux has studied for and worked on creating a successful career. She started practicing law at the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs in 1995 until 1998. She then moved to Cohen Milstein from 1998 to 2003.
Notably, Suzette focused in class litigation and representing plaintiffs in high-profile cases as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc v. Dukes and Alexander. She has represented the largest employment discrimination class action in U.S. history to date.
She then began her teaching career in 2003 at the University of Alabama School of Law. Additionally, Suzette joined the faculty of the Columbia School of Law at the Catholic University of America in 2006.
In 2019, Suzette Malveaux then joined the University of Colorado Law School, as the Provost Professor of Civil Rights Law and Director of the Byron R. White Center for Study of American Constitutional Law.
She is known for being a frequent commentator on different legal issues involving the U.S. Supreme Court, civil rights, and the civil legal system. Moreover, she has appeared on media outlets such as CNN, Al Jazeera English, MSNBC, and PBS Newshour.
