Neil went to three universities; Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Texas to study astrophysics. His first book Merlin Tour of the Universe was published in 1989, Universe Down to Erath in 1994, Just Visiting This Planet published in 1998 followed by One Universe, The Sky is not the Limit, Letters from an Astrophysicist, and other more selling over 1 million copies. He started writing monthly essays for Natural History Magazine in the Universe column from 1995 to 2005.
From 1991 to 1994, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. He was working as a staff scientist and director at the Hayden Planetarium. He was chosen by President George Bush to serve on the US Aerospace Industry Commission of the Future. He served as the Planetary Society president, vice president, and board chairman. In 1996, he oversaw a three-year $210 million construction project as the director of the planetarium.
In 1997, he founded the American Museum of Natural History and the Department of Astrophysics. Neil hosted Nova Science Now, a PBS Series, from 2006 to 2011. His podcast Star Talk was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 20 best Comedy Podcasts of 2014. Neil DeGrasse Tyson was born on 5th October 1958 in Manhattan, New York City.
He grew up in Tyson Hill with his brother Stephen, and sister Lynn, his mother Sunchita, a gerontologist in the health department, and his father, a human resource commissioner and sociologist. He grew up loving astronomy and would give astronomy lectures at the age of 15. He went to Bronx High School of Science and was the editor in chief of the Physical Science Journal and captain of the wrestling team.
He joined Harvard and in 1980, graduated with a degree in physics and a master’s degree from university of Texas in astronomy three years later. While studying for his MPhil degree in Columbia university, he was lecturing at university of Maryland in astronomy. He got his PhD in astrophysics in 1991. Neil met Alice Young in a physics class and got married in 1988. They had two children Miranda and Travis and lived in Tribeca in Manhattan with his family.
