Hansen grew up in West Bloomfield Township and later in Birmingham, Michigan. At one point, Hansen disclosed that at age 14, he wanted to become a journalist. His inspiration came from him watching investigative disappearance that involve FBI.
Regarding his education background, Hansen attended Brother Rice High School located in Bloomfield, Hills, Michigan. He then graduated from Michigan State University having earned a Bachelor of Arts in telecommunication.

Mary Hansen’s ex-husband became a reporter for NBC affiliate WILX in Lansing, Michigan during his senior year in 1981 at Michigan State University. Afterward, he got another position reported for WFLA in Tampa, Florida, among other radio stations and various newspapers.
Hansen then got hired as an investigative reported at WDIV in Detroit in 1988. He then joined NBC News as a correspondent for the magazine Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Counc. Hansen is also a former correspondent for Dateline NBC where he hosted the program To catch a Predator from 2004 to 2007.
