Claypool was born in 1963 in EL Sobrante, California. At the age of 14, he learned how to play the bass guitar although as a hobby. He graduated from De Anza High School in Richmond and worked as a carpenter for a while.
Claypool formed the band Primus in 1984 and was the lead singer, bassist, and main songwriter, Claypool on bass, Todd Huth on guitar and later replaced by Larry Lalonde, and Tim Alexander as the drummer. He mixes his bass-style tapping, flamenco-like strumming, slapping, and whammy bar bends. The band Primus gained significant mainstream airplay from 1989 to 2000. In 2006, he wrote and documented the film ‘Electric Apricot; Quest for Festeroo’, a mockumentary film. It aired at several film festivals with Claypool playing as the band’s drummer and backup vocalist. While filming the movie, the band had shows in California at events like the High Sierra Music Festival. The film has won awards including Best Feature in Audience Choice at the Malibu Film Festival. He released his first book by Akashic Books, ‘South of the Pumphouse’ in July 2006 talking about drugs, fishing, and the murders of brothers.
Claypool created Claypool Cellars in 2007, making wine, and turning it into a boutique business. He gets wine from the Russian River Valley in California. He gets inspiration to name his wine from his music, with names like ‘Purple Pachyderm’, created along with his wife, and ‘Pink Platypus’.
While on tour in 2015, he met Lennon who was touring with his group, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, and after a year of talking they decided to form a group including Baldi of Cake and Joao of Stone Giant. They released The Monolith of Phobos album in 2016 and their second album South of Reality in 2019. In May 2016, he was featured on Death Grips’ song ‘More Than the Fairy’.
