Arthur Gettleman was a retail glass businessman. He was known for being the husband of Estelle Getty, popularly known for her iconic portrayal of Sophia Petrillo on the series ‘The Golden Girls’. She is an American comedian and actress. Estelle won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and a Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Comedy. Arthur passed away at the age of 85 in September 2004 and Getty passed away in 2008.

Arthur was born on 6th May 1919 in Bronx County, New York. His wife Getty was introduced to him by a friend at a party in a theatre circuit in New York. Nine months later they invited friends and family to their wedding on 21st December 1947. They had two sons Carl and Barry Gettleman who live in California and Florida respectively. While Getty was working in California Arthur chose to remain in their home in New York working on his glass business. Getty’s father, Charles Scher, owned a family glass business installing glass windows into automobiles and trucks a job Arthur grew interested in and trained, he opened and ran his own in New York.
Arthur unfortunately passed away on September 23rd 2004 in Florida, USA after 56 years of marriage and four years later in 2008. He enjoyed a private life away from the limelight hence much is not known about him.

Estelle Scher was born on 25th July 1923. Growing up she always wanted to be an actress as her father would take them to the Academy of Music on 14th street to watch live performances and films every Friday. Her breakthrough role was in 1982 as Mrs. Beck off in the Broadway production of Torch Song Trilogy for four years. This got her a Drama Desk Award nomination
She is popular for her role as Sophia Petrillo on the TV show The Golden Girls. She first went for the audition while in her mid-60s and was unfortunately rejected twice as the role needed a woman in her 80s. She approached a make-up artist who changed her look, wigs, and clothes to fit an 80-year-old and that’s how she got the role in The Golden Girls cast. The show ended after seven seasons in 1992.
She was a favorite in the 80s and 90s for her role as a witty mom and meddlesome on television. She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Series.
Getty was featured in other shows like The Golden Palace for one season, Blossom, Empty Nest, Touched by an Angel, The Nanny, and Mad About You. She had a starring role in Stop or My Mom Will Shoot.
Arthurs’s wife Getty wrote an autobiography If I Knew Then What I Know Now…So What? And published it in 1988. She was involved in charitable programs, and HIV/AIDS activism and was always advocating for gay rights. Getty had an estimated net worth of $8 million.
Getty battled Lewy body dementia and unfortunately passed away on July 22, 2008.
