Early Life and Career of Cecilia Suyat Marshall

Cecilia Suyat Marshall was born in Pu’nene, Maui, in Hawaii on July 20, 1928. Her parents had emigrated from the Philippines in 1910. She was then raised in Hawaii with many siblings and her father owned a printing company. Unfortunately for Cecilia Suyat Marshall her mother died when she was young.

Cecilia Suyat Marshall then relocated to New York City to live with her maternal uncle and aunt following the advice of her father who wanted her to secure her future. The relocation came before she started working for the NAACP in Washington, D.C.

Cecilia Suyat Marshall’s first assignment involved picketing the film The Birth of a Nation at a local theater. She then stopped showing the film. Besides, she took night classes at Columbia University to help her become a court stenographer and this eventually led her to becoming a private secretary of Dr. Gloster B. Current, who was the head of the NAACP between 1948 to 1955.

Notably, her husband, Marshall, had been married before but his wife died of lung cancer and he found love again in Cecilia Suyat Marshall. Their wedding was held on December 17, 1955. In fact, Roy Wilkins, who was the then secretary of the NACCP presided over their wedding event.
