Newman was born in 1962 in Atlanta to his parents Gladys Knight and James Gaston Newman II. Newman was born during a time when his mother was a leader of the soul group Gladys Knight and the Pips.
He joined Bishop Gorman High School, where he graduated in 1980. He began playing football in high school and went on to play football during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He was recognized on the Nevada All-State football team as a defensive back.
Jimmy was the smallest on his varsity team, but he was loved and respected for his dedication and achievements as a player. He was also a member of the school’s award-winning performing group Harmony Express.
